Mike Horihan UK Visit – February 2017
As a PSBJJA affiliate, it’s not just awesome Gracie Jiu Jitsu we get; it’s also outstanding ‘back room’ support. Whilst on a visit to the UK to visit new affiliates at Southend Combat Academy in February, Mike Horihan was able to present a number of new tools and processes available to us. Peter Squire and I are super excited to roll these out to the guys at Team Pedro Sauer UK!
So as to meet as many association members as possible, Mike scheduled both a workshop event for Team Pedro Sauer UK and a seminar at Southend Combat Academy.
The first session on the Friday night, in South Woodham Ferrers, focussed on some nice mount maintenance and attack options, as well as some options to move to take the back and instead submit from there; some real golden nuggets in there!
The Saturday session first focussed on passing the guard; how to set it up and when to use the different options. Although not all the moves were new to me, this gave me a great hierarchal strategy to my guard passing.
The second half of the session focussed on transitioning to the mount position, once the guard has been passed. The two main options shown (plus variations) were again not new to me, but there were some tiny details that will make all the difference and hugely increase the percentage point chances that the move will work.
I’d like to say thanks to Mike for travelling to the UK, to Peter Squire and all the guys at Team Pedro Sauer UK for making our club so awesome, and to Simon Dempsey and his guys for hosting the seminar and making it such a great event!
