It’s always a fun time when Johann Eyvindsson is in town. Or at least, in a town nearby; namely sunny Southend-on-Sea.

Icelandic PSBBJA Black belt Johann was in Essex to test the latest batch of Southend Combat Academy Blue and Purple Belt hopefuls, and to give another of his superb Gracie Jiu Jitsu seminars.

As ever, I like to support as many seminars as I can with guys with such impeccable Gracie Jiu Jitsu lineage. So, myself and a handful of guys and girls from Team Pedro Sauer UK members braved the A127 on a Saturday lunchtime and headed to the seaside. Well near the seaside at least.

The seminar started out with promotion of the guys that he had tested the evening before, as well as the awarding of some extra stripes for some of the others.

Always one to maintain a conceptual focus in his sessions, Johann opted to work through ways to keep safe and buy yourself some time with late stage defense strategies. As such, he gave some useful tips and techniques against some of the most common ‘bad’ positions you might find yourself in.

Johann’s sense of humor always makes the day even better, even if some of it is best not repeated in polite company…

After taking some photos and saying our goodbyes, we got back on the road, and back out of the Southend peninsula.
