Guro Daniel Lonero Seminar – September 2016
Another September has rolled around. Which means one thing… Guro Daniel Lonero is making his annual tour of the UK.
Taking the opportunity to train with Guro Lonero at Laurence Sandum’s martial arts academy in Witham, the day of training was split into two sections; first off a focus on Silat, with the second section focussing on Kali.
The seminar opened up with a warm up, consisting of mobilisations and movements similar to those seen in Yoga and Ginastica Natural. Combined with the record breaking heat of the day, this made sure everyone was well warmed up and ready to train.
The Silat section started out with Guro Lonero working through common Silat throws, from a variety of entries, and how to use them in combination. This first series was finished off with some of the Lacoste armbar series, which in itself can lead to a variety of lock flows on the floor. Finishing off the Silat focus, Guro Lonero went through some Puter Kepala variations.
After a short break for some much needed food and water, the Kali section started out with double stick work; with some advanced Siniwali, and Abecedario variations.
The day rounded out with a section on empty hand defences against the knife, before multiple rounds of knife sparring; which is key to keep your training ‘honest’.
I enjoyed the day immensely; not only from a ‘list of techniques’ point of view, but also to hear some history and philsophy, and to get a glimpse of Guro Lonero’s personal training ethos.
I would like to offer a huge thank you to Guro Lonero for visiting and sharing just some of his Knowledge.
I would also like to thank Sifu Laurence Sandum for arranging the day.
Finally, a special thank you to David Farmer for partnering with me for the seminar.
