Jun Fan Gung Fu / Kali Workshop – September 2011
On Friday 30th September 2011, I was invited to an instructor workshop with Guro Daniel Lonero at Laurence Sandum’s Black Belt Martial Arts Academy in Chelmsford Essex, focusing on Jun Fan Gung Fu and Filipino Martial Arts (Kali).
I was highly excited about this opportunity as Guro Daniel is a instructor at the prestigious Inosanto Academy in Marina Del Ray, California.
Guro Daniel broke the workshop down into four one-hour sections.
Session one began with a warm-up of footwork and shadow boxing drills, before working some Jun Fan Kickboxing partner closing drills.
The second session focused on applied trapping combinations, working on distancing and sensitivity.
In the third session, Guro Daniel shifted focus to Kali, and in particular the Balintawak Mother drill with some variations.
The closing session of the day focused on single knife versus single knife work, based around the abecedario and palisut drills.
I would like to thank Guro Daniel for travelling to Chelmsford to give this highly informative workshop; I’m sure that everyone that took part will take away elements of the day and apply them in their own training and in their teaching.
Also, I would like to give special thanks to Guro Laurence Sandum for arranging the session.
